Dog Urine Cleaning Tips
How to remove dog urine from floor coverings and household furnishings.
Our advice is, start with the easiest and cheapest method. Ordinary household products can make a very effective dog urine remover when properly applied.
It's important for dog urine cleaning to be done thoroughly and quickly to keep your pet from using that area as his bathroom especially during
housetraining. The odour must be completely eliminated, you can't fool a dog's nose by covering a scent with pretty fragrances.
Here's how to clean dog urine using household products that you probably have in your cupboard right now.
-
Blot ~
Using paper towel folded several times blot the urine up by stepping on the paper towel which has been placed over the stain. Work from the outside toward the middle to keep urine from spreading. Change toweling as needed and continue until dry.
Apply Vinegar Solution ~
Make a solution of half white vinegar and half water. Liberally pour or spray solution over the area using enough to thoroughly wet the affected area.
Blot ~
Wait 1 minute and blot as directed above. You can use rags or paper products.
Dry ~
Allow to dry completely either overnight or using a fan or other drying method.
Baking Soda ~
When the area is completely dry sprinkle handfuls of baking soda onto the carpet or fabric and work it deep into the fiber using your fingers or a brush. Leave it for 2 or 3 hours.
Vacuum ~
Remove the baking soda by vacuuming. This should eliminate all odour and keep your puppy from being attracted to that area.
For stubborn urine deposits try Nature's Miracle products. Their enzyme containing formulas get right down to the nitty gritty.
Dog urine cleaning is easiest if it's done before it has been allowed to dry and it has not soaked through the topmost layer of flooring.
If the urine has penetrated to the underlay follow the above directions then:
-
Lift or Cut Carpet ~
Expose the soiled area by removing the carpet from that area.
Remove Damaged Underlay ~
Cut away and discard all stained and soiled underlay.
Treat Floorboards ~
If stains have penetrated as far as the floorboards spray with "Nature's Miracle" (sold at PetSmart) which contains odour eating enzymes.
